Hemophilic arthropathy limits daily life activities of patients with hemophilia, presenting with clinical manifestations such as chronic pain, limited mobility, or muscular atrophy. Although physical therapy is considered essential for these patients, few clinical studies have demonstrated the efficacy and safety of the various physiotherapy techniques. Physical therapy may be useful for treating hemophilic arthropathy by applying safe and effective techniques. However, it is necessary to create protocols for possible treatments to avoid the risk of bleeding in these patients. This article describes the musculoskeletal pathology of hemophilic arthropathy and characteristics of fascial therapy. This systematic protocol for treatment by fascial therapy of knee and ankle arthropathy in patients with hemophilia provides an analysis of the techniques that, depending on their purpose and methodology, can be used in these patients. Similarly, the protocol's applicability is analyzed and the steps to be followed in future research studies are described. Fascial therapy is a promising physiotherapy technique for treating fascial tissue and joint contractures in patients with hemophilic arthropathy. More research is needed to assess the efficacy and safety of this intervention in patients with hemophilia, particularly with randomized multicenter clinical trials

Exercise improves functional capacity in spinal cord injury (SCI). However, exhaustive exercise, especially when sporadic, is linked to the production of reactive oxygen species that may have a detrimental effect on SCI. We aimed to study the effect of a single bout of exhaustive exercise on systemic oxidative stress parameters and on the expression of antioxidant enzymes in individuals with paraplegia. The study was conducted in the Physical Therapy department and the Physical Education and Sports department of the University of Valencia. Sixteen paraplegic subjects were submitted to a graded exercise test (GET) until volitional exhaustion. They were divided into active or non-active groups. Blood samples were drawn immediately, 1 and 2 h after the GET. We determined plasma malondialdehyde (MDA) and protein carbonylation as markers of oxidative damage. Antioxidant gene expression (catalase and glutathione peroxidase-GPx) was determined in peripheral blood mononuclear cells. We found a significant increase in plasma MDA and protein carbonyls immediately after the GET (P<0.05). This increment correlated significantly with the lactate levels. Active paraplegics showed lower levels of exercise-induced oxidative damage (P<0.05) and higher exercise-induced catalase (P<0.01) and GPx (P<0.05) gene expression after the GET. These results suggest that exercise training may be useful in SCI patients to develop systemic antioxidant defenses that may protect them against exercise-induced oxidative damage.

Sports activities are part of multidisciplinary treatments in people with hemophilia. Aim: The objective of this study was to assess the incidence of sports activities in the quality of life as perceived by children with hemophilia. Methods: A total of 53 children with hemophilia aged 7 to 13 years and 51 children without hemophilia were evaluated. The perception of quality of life, clinical variables, and the frequency of sports activities were registered. The joint condition of patients with hemophilia was measured with the Spanish version of the Haemophilia Joint Health Score. Results: There were no significant differences in the perception of quality of life between children with hemophilia and children without hemophilia. Sports activities in people with hemophilia promoted a greater health satisfaction. Conclusions: Sports activity in children with hemophilia is associated with an improved quality of life and joint health. It is also associated with improved psychosocial wellness.
